We made Overland 2WD to be a resource for those who want to get out and explore roads, trails, and remote destinations with the vehicle they have.
Driving trails slowly and responsibly is a key principle of this community. We don’t want to see our trails torn up and abused because 2-wheel-drive vehicles have to “send it”. Rather, we encourage technique, properly aired down all-terrain tires, lockers, and if necessary – recovery.

Why 2WD instead of 4WD?
That’s the million dollar question.
Why would anybody want to overland with a 2×4 instead of a 4×4 vehicle?
There are a few reasons why this happens. Here are a few:
- You bought the vehicle before you liked overlanding. This was my case. I wanted a truck, I got a truck. They were hard to find and the market was crazy. I later discovered overlanding and off-roading and the rest is history. It’s a super reliable vehicle and right now it doesn’t make sense to switch to another just for 4 wheel drive capability. A few tasteful and reasonable modifications make this a solid overland rig.
- 2wd vans are easier to find than 4×4 vans. This is perhaps the most common scenario for 2wd overlanders. Adding a locker or Detroit Truetrac and some good tires makes a 2wd van a good option for easy dirt roads.
- You got a deal and like the simplicity of a 2wd vehicle. This is not a common scenario, but it’s reasonable. Just don’t drop too much money into this rig and make it something that it’s not.
So as you can see, it’s inevitable that there is a large group of people out there who overland with their 2WD trucks, cars, and vans. Learning LEAVE NO TRACE principles and keeping the trails clean will be a goal of ours here at Overland 2WD.
